As we build a collaborative, fun classroom atmosphere, you will gain confidence in how to apply these tools in future writing and pitching your work to be published. We will also study example texts along the way, such as op-eds and pieces of memoir, that show different methods for using historic or contemporary facts to give your writing sweep and heft. We will review tools that can help fact-find in any situation, as well as methods for interviewing academics or everyday people. We’ll go through each step of the process together: identifying what information you need, figuring out how to get it and workshopping the best ways to thread what you’ve learned into your narrative. In this hands-on course, you will work on moving between the wide view and the narrow one as you develop your own first-person essay. Personal writing gets stronger when you center it within the big picture, but finding and tying in that context takes practice. After Saturday, October 21: $180 for members, $210 for nonmembers.
